Abstract

Dental trauma is an irreversible pathology that merits special attention from health professionals. The aim of the present study was to assess the prevalence of dental trauma to the deciduous dentition as well as the factors associated to such trauma. The sample was composed of 120 children, residents of the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, ranging in age from 1 to 3 years and treated at health units during the poliomyelitis vaccination campaign. The chi-square test was employed in the analysis of the results. The prevalence of dental trauma was 48.3%, of which 84,5 % was fracture of the enamel. Falls were the most common cause of trauma reported by the mothers. Statistically significant relationships were found between dental trauma and mother’s schooling (p=0.013), inadequate lip protection (p= 0.012) and Social Vulnerability Index (p= 0.008). It was concluded that the prevalence of dental trauma was high, with fracture of the enamel being the most common type of trauma. Children of mother’s with low schooling, greater social vulnerability and inadequate lip protection suffer more dental trauma.
