Redução do ditongo: uma variável sociolinguística

Resumo: Este artigo trata das alternâncias ou ~ o e ei ~ e na fala casual e formal da região metropolitana de Belo Horizonte. Argumenta-se que tais alternâncias têm status de variável lingüística, não podendo, pois, ser explicitadas por regras estruturais categoriais. A tendência para a redução de tais ditongos está comprometida tanto com fatores internos, quanto com fatores externos ou sociais.

Abstract: This paper discusses the ou ~ o and ei ~ e alternations in the colloquial and formal registers of the Belo Horizonte metropolitan region. It argued that the above alternations have the statut of linguistic variable and so can not be described by categorial rules. The tendency to reduce these diphthongs depends on internal as well as external or social factors.
