Author Guidelines

Manuscripts

The Journal publishes original works of various types, lengths, and scope, as detailed below. Authors should not submit manuscripts previously published by or currently under review at other venues. If any part of a submitted manuscript has appeared elsewhere (or in another language), the author must clearly indicate this in both a cover letter and as a footnote in the submitted manuscript. Authors must obtain written permission to reproduce material that has appeared in another publication.

All submitted materials will be acknowledged upon receipt. Manuscripts that are seen as within FKR’s editorial scope will be subjected to single-blind peer review. Copies of the referees' comments will be forwarded to the submitting or corresponding author, as will the Editor-in-Chief’s (EIC) decision.

Word Counts Matter

The Journal is fully digital, but word counts still matter. For all types of submissions, the word count includes the body of the manuscript, tables, captions, and appendices. The word count does not include the abstract, key words, and references. Submissions are checked for adherence to the appropriate word count guidance. Remenber that, referees may ask for additional details and explanations so revised manuscripts can be up to 10% longer.

Research Articles

The primary focus of FKR’s is to publish Research Articles. A Research Article can be up to 7,000 words (excluding references, abstract, key words and supplemental materials). Research articles should be grounded in theory, connected to relevant scholarship in Knowledge Representation and Ontologies and beyond, describe the methods used, link new findings to existing knowledge, and offer original and significant contributions.

Guidance for revising a conference paper for submission to FKR:

Prior conference papers should be acknowledged in the cover letter with an explanation of how the FKR submission expands on the prior publication.. While exact ‘percentages of change’ may be difficult to identify, more than 30% of the manuscript should be new. In addition, results and contributions should be clearly advanced and expanded from the original work.

Conflict of Interest Declaration

To ensure the integrity and consistency in the review process, authors must declare any potential conflicts of interest during submission. Such conflicts include existing professional or academic relationships between the author(s) and possible reviewers.

Authors must disclose the names and sources of all funding, as this helps readers to understand the relationships between funding sources and published work.

Language

Manuscripts submitted to FKR must be written in English and use formal scholarly conventions; if not, they will be returned without further review. 

Authors, mainly non-natives English speaking, are encouraged to have their manuscript professionally edited before submission, as quality writing makes scientific work more accessible. Authors wishing to use a professional English-language editing service should contact and arrange payment with the editing service of their choice. For make the process easier for anyone, FKR suggests an alternative with experience in proof-reading: Kochiras.

 Formatting and Style

Manuscripts submitted to FKR should follow APA Style guidelines (http://www.apastyle.org/manual). For elements of page layout such as margins, headings, and citations/references, please follow this template.

Manuscript Guidance

• Title Page: The first page of the manuscript must bear the title of the submission and the full names of all contributing authors, as well as their affiliations, full addresses, telephone, and e-mail addresses. In the case of multiple authors, please indicate which author is to receive correspondence and proofs.
• Abstract: An informative abstract containing a maximum of 200 words is required for the articles.
• References: References and in-text citations should follow APA Style guidelines. Manuscripts not following APA guidelines will be returned to the author(s). The accuracy and completeness of references and in-text citations are the responsibility of the author(s).

File Formats and Types

All FKR submissions should be prepared in either MS Word, according to this template, and submitted in PDF during the submission process.

 Instructions for MS Word Submissions:

Submit One Main Document: The Main Document should contain all text, captions, tables, and figures in a single file.

• Acceptable file formats: .doc, .docx., .rtf.
• Figures and tables should be positioned in the manuscript after the paragraph in which they are first mentioned.
• Tables should be created using the Table Tool in MS Word.
• Figures in MS Word Submissions: All figures should appear within the Main Document. All images should be high-quality and legible to readers and reviewers.

Review Process

FKR uses a single-blind review process to ensure the integrity and quality of its published work. Each submission undergoes initial screening for adherence to the Author by Editor In Chief (EIC) for assessment for fit to the journal and level of quality. Submissions that are seen as of sufficient fit and quality are then assigned to a Review Editor (RE) with relevant topical expertise for additional evaluation. Peer review involves at least two, and typically three or more, expert referees. Concerns with the review process or decision should be directed to the EIC. There is no formal appeals process for a decision. 

Author Response to Reviewer Comments

To ensure a smooth and timely review of a revised manuscript, authors should include a letter with point-by-point response, addressing all comments from editors and reviewers as comprehensively as possible.

Manuscripts recommended for acceptance may be reviewed for word count and quality of writing. This may lead to additional requests to the author(s) to shorten and clarify the text before final acceptance.
