However, if the evolution of the educational system has received public attention, the actual modes of functioning and pedagogical practices are seldom mentioned in official documents. In what music education and particularly in what singing teaching are concerned many studies can be found, covering aspects such as the benefits of vocal practice for children; on the other hand, there is hardly any information available concerning the actual work developed with children. The information collected during a careful and extensive literature review for a PhD project on the topic of music education and voice education in Portugal in the specialized and generalist branches of the 1st Cycle (6 to 9 years-old) demanded further study of the theme in other countries for comparison purposes.
