O objetivo deste estudo foi associar indicadores de desnutrição crônica pós-natal com síndrome metabólica, obesidade abdominal e sobrepeso. A amostra foi constituída de 251 residentes da comunidade rural Virgem das Graças, localizada na região do Vale do Jequitinhonha, MG. Baixa estatura e proporção estatura sentada/estatura corporal (ES/EC) foram usadas como variáveis indicadoras de desnutrição crônica pós-natal. A prevalência de baixa estatura foi 31,9%, síndrome metabólica 21,5%, obesidade abdominal 26,7%, sobrepeso 25,5%. A alta proporção ES/EC se associou ao sobrepeso (OR = 7,46; IC 95% 1,59-34,81), mostrando que indivíduos com segmento superior corporal mais longo possuem maior chance de apresentar sobrepeso.

El objetivo de este estudio fue asociar indicadores de desnutrición crónica post-natal con el síndrome metabólico, obesidad abdominal y sobrepeso. La muestra estuvo constituida de 251 residentes de una comunidad rural, Virgen das Graças, situada en la región del Valle del Jequitinhonha, Minas Gerais. La estatura baja y proporción de estatura sentada/estatura corporal (ES/EC) se emplearon como variables indicadoras de desnutrición crónica post-natal. La prevalencia de baja estatura fue del 31.9%, síndrome metabólica 21.5%, obesidad abdominal 26.7% y sobrepeso 25.5%. La alta proporción ES/EC fue asociada al sobrepeso (OR = 7,46; IC 95% 1,59-34,81), mostrando que individuos con segmento superior corporal más largo tienen posibilidades de presentar sobrepeso.

The objective was to associate postnatal chronic malnutrition with metabolic syndrome, abdominal obesity and overweight. A cross-sectional population-based study was carried out in 251 residents of a rural community, Virgem das Graças, located at the Jequitinhonha Valley, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Short stature and sitting-height-to-stature-ratio were the variables used as postnatal nutritional insult indicators. Short stature prevalence was 31.9%, as well as metabolic syndrome 21.5%, abdominal obesity 26.7% and overweight 25.5%. A significant association between high sitting-height-to-stature-ratio and overweight was found (OR = 7.46; CI 95% 1.59-34.81), which shows that individuals who have longer upper body segment proportion present a higher chance of developing overweight.
