trabalho.

ABSTRACT
This current dissertation has a purpose to understand how the so-called “prudential
knowledge” - experiences and knowledge accumulated over years of professional activity
- of civil construction workers can contribute to the reduction of accidents in the field.
Although the legislation advocates the use of personal protective equipment and work
safety training, workers develop other forms of safety, using implicit knowledge, built
throughout their working life and shared in the work environment. The research has a
qualitative approach, with an exploratory and descriptive focus. Semi-structured
interviews and simple observation were used as instruments of data collection with
workers. Among the results obtained from the analysis of the data in its totality, we
highlight that work safety managers, without an adequate pedagogical support, use
methods and tools that do not allow dialogue and exchange of knowledge during the
training offered at works sites. These managers ignore the workers previous knowledge.
It was possible to observe that during the mandatory training proposed by the work safety
managers, the workers were mere viewers. In that place, there was no possibility of
dialogue and the knowledge was transmitted in a vertical way without listening another
point of view. However, it was noticed, in the daily work, that the workers developed and
shared practices that were not considered by the norms and that could have been
mentioned during the training. Listening to the workers allows to establish a relationship
between the knowledge developed by them and the technical and scientific knowledge.
As a technical product resulting from the research, we present a “card game”. The
purpose of this teaching tool is to bring out the workers' experiences translated by the
knowledge represented in the context of an interactive process, enabling them to critically
perceive work relationships. In this way, it will be possible to build new knowledge and
practices through social relationships in the context of civil construction, increase the
participation of workers in their workspace, which can directly impact not only in this
immediate space, but also in their relationships, ways of life and experiences in society
as a whole. Consequently, it is expected to promote conditions for the participation of
these social actors in a perspective of local development, based on the increase of their
participation in their workspace.
