Vocalizações de liberação de machos de duas espécies de pererecas-gladiadoras (Cophomantini, grupo de espécies Boana faber), com uma comparação acústica intragenérica

Anuros emitem vocalizações que transmitem mensagens distintas, dependendo do contexto de emissão. Vocalizações reprodutivas medeiam interações intraespecíficas em contextos reprodutivos e, dentre elas, o canto de anúncio é o tipo mais conspícuo e mais bem descrito. Ele serve para atrair parceiros, sinalizar agressividade entre machos da mesma espécie e manter o espaçamento entre indivíduos que vocalizam em coro. Outra vocalização reprodutiva, o canto de rejeição, é emitido por machos e fêmeas para sinalizar a não receptividade ao amplexo por parte de um indivíduo da mesma espécie. Boana Gray, 1825, é um gênero rico em espécies e amplamente distribuído na região Neotropical; o grupo de espécies Boana faber compreende pererecas-gladiadoras construtoras de ninhos que utilizam espinhos prepolegares para defender seus territórios. O canto de anúncio é conhecido para todas as espécies do grupo B. faber; no entanto, o canto de rejeição do macho é conhecido apenas para uma espécie do grupo. Além disso, o canto de rejeição do macho é conhecido apenas para cinco das 101 espécies de Boana. Neste estudo, descrevemos pela primeira vez o canto de rejeição do macho de Boana crepitans e B. faber e realizamos comparações acústicas intragenéricas entre os cantos de rejeição de machos conhecidos no gênero Boana. O canto de rejeição do macho de ambas as espécies é composto por um único tipo de nota. Notas pulsadas são onipresentes em B. crepitans, mas podem ser pulsadas, pulsáteis ou não pulsadas em B. faber. Além do envelope temporal, as notas apresentaram diferenças na duração (209–449 ms em B. crepitans e 5–80 ms em B. faber) e na taxa de repetição de pulsos (19–25 pulsos/s em B. crepitans e 147–156 pulsos/s em B. faber). Ao ampliar nossas comparações acústicas para o gênero Boana, observamos grande variação nos poucos cantos de rejeição descritos para o grupo. Nosso estudo também destaca a escassez de descrições de cantos de rejeição de machos em Boana e, finalmente, amplia o número de descrições conhecidas desse tipo de canto para sete das 101 espécies de Boana.
