Phototherapy in the treatment of oral mucositis

a literature review

Stomatitis, Phototherapy, Lasers, Low-level light therapy

Aim: This study aims to report the characteristics of oral mucositis and the effect of phototherapy in the treatment of this condition.

Methods: A bibliographic search was done in the electronic databases Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, and Scielo. The search strategy was based on the research of the following descriptors: LLLT, Low-Level Laser Therapy, Light, phototherapy, phototherapy, Photobiomodulation Therapy, Photobiostimulation Laser Irradiation, Laser, Mucositis, and Oral Mucositis.

Results: After reviewing the full articles, 22 articles were considered adequate to be included in the review, with one published in 2012 (4.5%), one in 2013 (4.5%), two in 2015 (9.1%), two in 2016 (9.1%), four in 2017 (18.2%), nine in 2018 (40.9%), and three in 2019 (13.7%).

Conclusion: It can be concluded that laser therapy is effective in the prevention and treatment of oral mucositis induced by chemoradiotherapy, reducing pain and promoting tissue healing.
