Abstract

Introduction: Artificial intelligence (AI), particularly through chatbots like ChatGPT, has transformative potential across various areas of knowledge, including Dentistry, gaining prominence for generating human-like text and being increasingly explored in the industry.

Objective: To map and synthesize the available scientific evidence on the impacts of ChatGPT in dental education.

Methodology: The PRISMA guidelines for scoping reviews were followed, and methodological details were previously registered on the Open Science Framework platform. The search was conducted in the PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science databases in May 2024, to identify relevant studies. Studies that reported different uses, benefits, and limitations of ChatGPT in dental education for students, professors, and patients were included.

Results: Of the 161 articles identified in the search, 14 were selected for descriptive analysis according to eligibility criteria. Regarding the type of evidence provided, cross-sectional studies were the most common (n=5), followed by experimental studies (n=3), comparative studies (n=2), and descriptive studies (n=2).

Conclusion: ChatGPT can be a useful complementary tool in dental education if used with caution and supervision, offering benefits in patient education and information. However, significant limitations exist, such as the accuracy of information, technological dependence, and ethical concerns.
