Football, Leisure, and Rivalry
(In)Sociability in the New Capital of Goiás (1936-1939)

This study aims to investigate the movement of football teams in Goiânia between 1936 and 1939, emphasizing their effects on social relations and leisure practices. The selected timeframe considers historical records that document Goiânia in its early settlement, drawing primarily on the situacionist newspapers Correio Official – Estado de Goyaz and O Popular. Within this spatial-temporal context, it is possible to discern the formation of local identities and their impact on the football sphere, particularly the social tensions emerging from these pioneering associations. The characteristics of this scenario compromised local sociability, resulting in elements of rivalry that not only fueled popular interest in football but were also reinforced by the ways in which the phenomenon was framed as both entertainment and a means of urban affirmation.
