The Price of Music
Notes on Women’s Musical Work in the Proslavery Society of Rio de Janeiro

This article aims to discuss the price of music in the 19th century Rio de Janeiro and how music production was part of the culture, leisure and entertainment of that proslavery society, given a time frame of just over 25 years (1852-1879). The analysis presented here will consider work relations based on forced labor and the incipient presence of money and salaried work as background for the development of music-related activities and their influence on the ways of life at the time. For this, I will make a brief record of the establishment of musical services in the city and their impact on the lives of an expressive contingent of women, both from the point of view of entertainment and from the perspective of music as a labor activity. The emphasis of the discussion will be on the professional female musicians and on contrasting views this society had on artistic work.
