Body, Gender and Capoeira
Autoetnographic Readings from Physical Cultural Studies

Through feminist inspirations in Physical Cultural Studies, this study analyzes, through an auto-ethnographic report, experiences with the Abadá Capoeira Group of Vale do Araguaia, problematizing questions about body, gender and capoeira, based on the power relations present in this manifestation. The experiences come from the participation of the first author in that group since 1996, and are taken as empirical elements for self-reflective readings. Through self-ethnography, four categories were constructed, which point to the production of women's ginga as a possibility of subversion of power relations that integrate capoeira. As a result, we highlight that the narratives help to understand the power relations that go through capoeira in order to serve as input for those who integrate this bodily manifestation.Downloads
