Discontinuity in Female Leisure in Portugal
The Case of Football in the União Recreativa de Cultura e Desporto de Coina (1981-1990)

The observation of the adoption of female football at the União R. C. D. de Coina (Portugal) between 1981 and 1990 shows how the triangulation between leisure, landscape and nature has to be carry out with some meticulousness, taking the inner characteristics of each institution. Once analyzed as primordial, probably it would not be always comparable to the rest of the country. The adoption of football in the village of Coina ended up shaping an entire regional territory and placed a small peripheral place of Lisbon’ outskirts on the mental map of the national followers of this sport. This case study shows how football entered into the strategies for implementing women's right to leisure in Portugal, and it had different forms and variables through time and space.
