The aim of the present study is to understand the ideas defended by Veblen in “The Theory of the Leisure Class” in order to think about their applicability on studies about sports and leisure inside the present consumption society. Veblen’s ideas about nature and human behavior and also about consumption, sports and leisure are analyzed and reproduced in this study. Beyond the limits of instrumental rationality and the importance of the habits, the most important Veblen’s contributions are the ones about the relations between culture and rationality. Researches about this issue may allow the discovery of the agents motivations related to their conduct as sports and leisure consumers, in all the ways these phenomena occur in our society.
