LEISURE IN URBAN PUBLIC PARKS: DIVERSITY OF USE, USERS AND SOCIAL NEEDS

Faced with the expansion of urbanization and the increase of population density in the cities, the public green spaces have acquired the meaning and the role of visual and mental rest. For this reason, this paper aims to understand the relation between spacial functionality and usage suitability in the Solon de Lucena Park, João Pessoa - PB. Conducted through quali-quantitative methods, the study was structured by a bibliographical review of scientific articles that address the use and appropriation of public spaces by its users and the interrelation between human beings, urban parks and nature; on-site visits for exploration and observation; and the production of icons representing the uses found in the studied place.The results point to the diversity of uses, forms of appropriation by users of green leisure spaces, revealing the different social needs manifested in such public spaces.
