(IN)TOLERANCE ON THE FIELD
PERSECUTORY MOVEMENTS AND MAINTENANCE OF THE STATUS QUO IN FOOTBALL
Keywords:
Racism, Xenophobia, FootballAbstract
The 17th and 18th centuries were marked by the launching of theoretical bases regarding the concept of tolerance that we understand today. The historical process was able to generate new problematizations and reflections, framing the theme in different areas of social life. The purpose of this study was to analyse current and recurring cases of prejudice, discrimination and persecution in football, with considerable journalistic repercussions, based on the contributions of classic and, mainly, more contemporary literature on tolerance, with emphasis on the Portuguese author Diogo Pires Aurélio. As an excerpt, three contexts for investigation were listed: the relationship between European football leagues and athletes who practice Islam; the act of punishing the victim who suffers from racist insults on the field; and finally, the strategy of maintaining a social order that favours those who hold power.
