Abstract

This article reconstructs the first years of the Villa Nova Athletic Club, a team of workers origin officially created in the year 1908, until the early 1930's. The main objective is to analyze and problematize the initial formation of Villa Nova as a strategy of control of bodies of the workers of the Morro Velho Mine. This will allow us to know more about the phenomenon of creation of workers' clubs in Minas Gerais. To that end, the main sources were the Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro periodicals available in the Digital Library of the National Library, as well as the precious collection of the Linhares Collection, also available digitally. National politics and football as strategies for control of the workers' bodies were inseparable pillars in the initial construction of this new, pretentiously industrialized society, and the history of the early years of the Villa Nova Athletic Club could not be separated from this complex field. hegemonic disputes.
