Abstract

he present article analyses the linguistic ideology of Lima Barreto’s fiction and literary criticism, through a metalinguistic discourse. In fact the linguistic perspective reveals the powerful dimension of the language, and Lima Barreto makes use of this power in order to fight against social and linguistic prejudice. Adopting both the Discourse Analysis and Linguistic Historiography methodologies, this article is concerned with academic style, linguistic purism and grammatical preciosity in the premodernist language.
