Resumo

The aim of this paper is to eliscuss the possible interpretations of the high back vowel [wl preceeleel by [kl ar [g] anel followeel by another vowel. Some phonologists interpret [kwl anel [gwl as the labializeel velars /k"'j anel /gw/, respectively. ln the framework of the present-elay preference for principies insteacl of mies, I argue that the best interpretation for these groups woulcl be as /k/ anel /gI followeel by a diphthong. However, both interpretations have aelvantages anel elisadvantages.
