Abstract

The phrase ‘se pá’ often occurs in several varieties of contemporary Brazilian Portuguese, but it is under-investigated concerning its semantic properties. Intending to contribute to the description and explanation of the uses of this phrase, this work aims to build up a semantic analysis of the expression ‘se pá’, and propose that the current interpretation of the expression as an adverb of doubt similar to ‘talvez’ (Se pá, eu vou à festa” ⇒ “Talvez eu vá à festa”) can be semantically derived from a conditional interpretation, in which the element ‘pa’ acts as an indefinite proposition, that is, it expresses that there is a possible proposition without defining its content, being interpreted, through logical implications, as a possibility modal operator modifying the nuclear clause.
