Analysis and description of the intonational pattern of wh-in-situ questions in Brazilian Portuguese

Abstract

The goal of this study is to analyze and formally describe the intonational pattern of neutral wh-in-situ questions in the variety of Portuguese spoken in the city of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. The data analyzed were obtained through studio recording of 12 individuals, born and residing in the city, who read a script containing wh-in-situ interrogative sentences in different discursive-pragmatic contexts that favor the occurrence of the structure, based on Oushiro (2011). The intonational annotation was made according to the DaTo system (Lucente, 2008, 2012, 2022) in the software Praat (Boersma; Weenink, 2022). Statistical analyses of f0 values were also carried out, with the help of the R language (R Core Team, 2023). The results indicate that the wh-in-situ questions predominantly present, in the collected data, a pattern of gradual increase in f0 followed by a descending movement in the stressed syllable of the wh-word. It is also concluded that the range of variation of the average f0 values was smaller in sincere questions, that is, questions for which new information is expected as an answer, with a closed set of answers given in the previous sentence, which seems to be related to a greater degree of activation of the common ground and a lesser need for intonational prominence.
