Jakobson, an enunciative linguist, but what enunciation are we talking about?

This paper addresses Jakobson’s theoretical postulations aligned with general linguistics, highlighting the approximation between a linguist interested in the communication process and the linguistics of enunciation. The corpus of analysis is composed of texts from the Brazilian edition of the work Linguistics and Communication and the text Les embrayeurs, which is in volume I of the work Essais de Linguistique Générale. The reading of the texts outlines Jakobson’s thinking between enunciation and communication and, in the end, it is found that there is no chronological transition from a communicative or functionalist conception of language to an enunciative conception; these themes are interspersed within and among his texts. Our study demonstrates that Jakobson proposes a general linguistics by revealing a continuous and critical interlocution with other fields of knowledge, by bringing general operator concepts to explain practical problems of language and by making linguistics a science of meaning. In fact, it is the theme of meaning, found in all the texts analyzed, that puts communication and enunciation into perspective and marks Roman Jakobson’s place among the main linguists of the 20th century.
