This article highlights the current relevance of the debate surrounding the theoretical and methodological possibilities of general linguistics - a field of linguistic studies that gained prominence in the late 19th century and became more established in the first half of the 20th century. After a long period of reduced scholarly production in this area, the 21st century has seen a renewed interest in epistemological reflections on the subject. In this context, the text revisits historical and conceptual aspects of general linguistics, outlines some of the field’s contemporary trends, and introduces the articles that make up the thematic section of this journal, which is dedicated to the current state of this discussion within Brazilian linguistics.
