Abstract

This study aimed to identify and analyze the scientific literature addressing the sexuality of spouse-caregivers of older adults with dementia. We searched the Lilacs, Medline, CINAHL and Web of Science databases and identified 208 articles, of which 13 were selected for inclusion in the study The data were analyzed using content analysis. The results demonstrate that factors related to changes caused by dementia significantly affect couples' frequency of sexual activity, leading to a decline in intimacy. Conversely, an important aspect of sexuality in dementia concerns the substitution of sexual activity for other ways of demonstrating affection and having physical intimacy. We propose that further studies are required to identify more scientfically appropriate approaches, including therapeutic nursing care.
