This is a descriptive and quantitative study that aims to assess the hampering factors that lead to treatment nonadherence among high-blood-pressure patients. The study included 359 hypertensive patients enrolled in the 'Santos Reis Family Health Program', in the city of Alfenas, Minas Gerais. Data was obtained through a validated questionnaire containing 26 structured and semi-structured questions, answered during home visits. The results were analyzed, discussed and interpreted using Chi-Square Test at 5%. Results showed that patients were mostly married housewives with a maximum monthly income of 3 minimum salaries, with low education level, waist fat and undergoing hypertension treatment, especially pharmacologic treatment. Patients showed lack of knowledge regarding the pathology and complications associated to high blood pressure. Conclusions point to challenges concerning the need of changing patients' behavior as to adding non-pharmacological measures to their life-style. The authors suggest the following approaches as possible ways to enhance adhesion: commitment of health professionals to implement educational processes and their follow up as to increase awareness and interest on self-care; control of patients regarding correct use of medication and family concern regarding life-style changes.Downloads
