Resumen

En este artículo, analizo los acontecimientos que rodearon al falso mesías Sabbatai Sevi. Sostengo que este fenómeno, junto con otros casos de falso mesianismo, constituye un recurso crucial para el judaísmo, una subcorriente anarquista que sirve para socavar las certezas que, de otro modo, conducen al arquismo, un sistema de dominación y opresión basado en suposiciones carentes de fundamento. Contrasto las interpretaciones del sabateísmo de Gershom Scholem, un académico que veía a Sevi como una fuerza de negación que, en última instancia, conducía a prácticas concretas, con el sentido de negación más radical de Walter Benjamin, que impide permanentemente la transformación en algo incuestionable. Mientras que la interpretación de Scholem, sostengo, perpetúa el arquismo, la de Benjamin es anarquista.

James Martel teaches political theory in the department of political science at San Francisco State University. His most recent publication is Anarchist Prophets: Disappointing Vision and the Power of Collective Sight (Duke 2022). He has a new book under contract also with Duke entitled Continuous Assembly: The Power and Promise of Non-Archism.
