Special Issue: Paul Feyerabend and the History and Philosophy of Science

Paul Feyerabend (1924-2024) was a renowned philosopher of science known for his influential contributions to the field, his controversial ideas on science and philosophy, and the relationship between science and society. His most (in)famous book, Against Method (1975), has shaken the grounds of university, philosophy and science, changing definitely the way we understand them. His work influenced great philosophers, such as Lakatos, Kuhn, Latour, Chang and many others. As was once said, Feyerabend is one of the four leading philosophers of science of the twentieth century, and since last year we have celebrated the centennial anniversary of his birth; this event gives us all a perfect opportunity to honour him with this special issue.

Therefore, Transversal is pleased to announce a Call for Papers for a special issue dedicated to exploring Paul Feyerabend’s contributions to the history and philosophy of science and other fields of science. This special issue aims to provide a platform for scholars to engage historically, philosophically, and critically with Feyerabend’s work, its influences, and its impact on those fields.

We invite contributions that address, but are not limited to, the following themes:

  • Feyerabend’s contributions to the nature of scientific theories, scientific practice, method and progress;
  • Pluralism, anarchism, and relativism in Feyerabend’s philosophy of science;
  • Feyerabend’s views on the relationship between science, expertise, and society;
  • The impact of Feyerabend’s philosophy on later work in the philosophy of science;
  • Unexplored influences on and from Feyerabend’s thought;
  • The relevance of Feyerabend’s work for contemporary problems in science and the philosophy of science.
