Abstract

School and family, both together, play an important role in the individual development of the children. Therefore, this study aimed at evaluating knowledgement of 245 education professionals towards oral health care who work in 24 public municipal pre-schools in Niterói, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Data were obtained from self- questionnaires consisting of both open and closed questions. Methodology was quantitative and qualitative whereas quantitative analysis was based on the frequency (%) by using the SPSS statistical software version 11.0. It was observed that 97% of the education professionals already had received information on buccal health, mainly the dentists (86%) followed of the medias (59.8%). However, the auto-evaluation of its knowledge about buccal health was positive, because the majority of the education professionals (92.7%) had considered it good or reasonable and 59.8% had almost told to have conditions to guide its schoolchildrens, when questioned about specific questions of buccal health, it could be observed that the great majority of the answers occurred of simple and comprehensive form, as, normally, the health professionals and the medias approach these questions with the community. It was concluded, therefore, that the level of knowledge of education professionals is not appropriate and they own inconsistent opinions on basic concepts and information related to the buccal health.
