Evaluation of an educational method of oral health in students from public schools

Abstract

Preventive actions can be carried out through education and motivation of the patient as regards the taking care of one’s oral hygiene. This study investigated the value of a dental health education program designed to improve the dental knowledge of primary students. Thirty-three children participated in a school-based dental health education program. First, the children were divided in three groups. One week later, each group was asked to present a seminar about a specific dental subject to the class. The effectiveness of the method was accessed by means of the children’s completion of a dental knowledge questionnaire, before and after the seminars. The evaluation was also carried out by analyzing a text produced by the children after 15 days of the program, focusing on keywords. The comparison between answers obtained before and after the program indicated an increase in the children’s health knowledge level. The positive effect of the method was confirmed by the presence of at least one impact element in all compositions. It could be concluded that the educational program promoted an increase in knowledge regarding dental health. Moreover, it is during the early school years that children are more receptive to new knowledge.
