Abstract

Capsaicin is the active element found in chilli peppers, which is responsible for its spicy, burning sensation. Capsaicin has several pharmacological intervention properties, such as mucolytic, thermogenic, and analgesic actions. It acts in the physiopathology of pain, mainly in the chemical mediators responsible for analgesia, thus temporarily inhibiting the substance P. It has been used in several analgesic treatments, including chronic oral facial pain, post-herpetic neuralgia, and deafferentation.
