Dental care in patients with Hemophilia and von Willebrand Disease
Keywords:
Blood coagulation disorders, Hemophilia A, von Willebrand diseasesAbstract
Patients with blood coagulation disorders constitute a group that requires attention and special care in dental practices. Hemophilia and the von Willebrand diseases are the most common of all hereditary blood coagulation disorders and must be detected before conducting any dental treatment. Good medical history, associated with a good physical and oral examination, can help in the detention of these pathologies. The dentist must be prepared to offer the most appropriate treatment option to these patients, which depends on the severity of the disease and the type of procedure to be carried out. Generally, less invasive procedures do not require special care, so long as some basic procedures are taken. Surgeries and anesthesia techniques to block the inferior alveolar nerve must be performed with great precaution so as to minimize the risks of bleeding and other complications. A hematologist must be consulted whenever any invasive treatment is planned.
