Abstract

The present study had as aim to evaluate the students´and Odontopediatrics´ knowledge level regarding the use of medical emergency and urgency protocols in 2005, in the city of Belém-PARÁ, in situations that can happen in pediatric and general dentistry services, as well as to describe their clinical aspects. Specific methodology was adopted based on bibliographical research and a questionnaire application with multiple choice and essay questions, distributed to 121 students and 30 Dentistry pediatricians. These questions approached the willingness to take part in a course on this theme, the ideal period for teaching these situations, the knowledge on the Basic Life Support protocol and about necessary equipments for urgency and/or emergency services, and clinical situations such as syncope, hipoglycemia, convulsion, asthma, ocular accidents and obstruction of the air ways. It was verified that, although conscious about the risks of these situations, most of them don’t have systematized knowledge about the necessary procedures in urgency and emergency cases, and many of them demonstrated interest in participating in an updating course about this subject. It was concluded that, most of the students and professionals don’t have medical emergency and urgency protocols, which ate fundamental in order to offer a quality service for all patients.
