Abstract

The elastomeric impression materials are becoming more and more popular among dentists each day, and they represent the majority of the impression materials commercially available nowadays. In Brazil, the dentistry professionals prefer condensation silicones. The need of the impression materials to reproduce the oral cavity in tiny details is evident; and, its roughness is closely related, as less rough the impression surface, more faithful will be the reproduced details.

The aim of this work was to assess the superficial roughness of two impression techniques with two different condensation silicones (Zetapuls – Zhemark, Clonage – DFL) putty/ wash ) under the influence of chemical disinfection using a 2% clorexidina spray (for five minutes). Fifty-six specimens were subdivided into 8 groups for each impression technique, being that half for each technique were chemically disinfected using a 2% clorexidina spray before the roughness test. The specimens were tested for their roughness with a digital roughmeter (RP 100). For each specimen, three readings were carried out in different directions, and the obtained results were submitted to variance analysis and the Tukey’s test (p<0.05). It was concluded that there was no statistically significant difference when the two types of materials were analyzed, regardless of their chemical disinfection. However, there were statistically significant differences when the used technique and chemical disinfection were analyzed independently.
