Abstract

Sickle cell anemia is a highly prevalent genetic hemoglobinopaty in Brazil. This disease is characterized by falciform erythrocytes that generate ischemia and tissue infarctions, thus putting several organs at risk, including the oral and maxillofacial area. In this study, the general and buccal aspects of 8 patients with sickle cell anemia, residents of Datas, MG, Brazil, were investigated. The more frequent buccal discoveries included: mucous pallor, hypomaturation in enamel and dentine, and rude bony trabeculae. In addition, all patients reported previous histories of pneumonia. The objective of this study is to clarify and demonstrate to dentistry professionals when buccal alterations in patients with sickle cell anemia consitutes an effective treatment.
