Abstract

In this article, the play The Cyclops (2002), by César Miguel Brie, is compared in a comparative study with the only satirical drama to survive today: The Cyclops, by Euripides. The fable of the man-eating giant can be traced back to Canto IX of the Homeric Odyssey, and of the hero of a thousand wiles, Ulysses, since his tricks in the Iliad.  Next to the analysis of the fable and its role in Brien’s dramaturgy, the stage production of the group La Tropilla was investigated, in the metabolization of the body and in the inflections of the voice, in the scenic play between Ulysses, Silenus and Polyphemus. Sarrazac (2012), Rosenfeld (2014) and Guimarães (2022a, 2022b) were adopted as a theoretical framework for the study of the fable; for the study of the body in theater, Barba (1994), Brie (1995) and Rojo (1999; 2016). As a result, we expect the dissemination of César Brie’s work in Brazil and an investigation into the fable, the body and the voice based on a comparative study between classical and contemporary theater.
