Abstract

This research is based on the premise that Don Juan Tenorio by José Zorrilla is a theatre play that, through the portrait of the protagonist and his redeemer, analyzes the motifs that make sexuality and war methods of domination and redemption. This article will study how Don Juan’s extravagancy and the allegory of his wantonness through the excesses of the carnival have connotations of sacred ritual and mystical fantasy that are complementary to Doña Inés’s transformative/redemptive function. In addition, the article studies how the motif of true love is represented as a universal force and a hope for eternity.
