Abstract

This article aims to reflect about the ruins of Pontal, located in the city of Porto Nacional, in the State of Tocantins. Pontal, extinct Bom Jesus do Pontal city, is an archaeological site that has the potential for educational projects due to its archaeological remains related to the process of occupation and formation of the oldest regional branches in the state of Tocantins that date from the 18th century, related to gold mining. However, the archaeological site is in a complete state of disrepair, configuring itself as a “dead monument”. The work intends to demonstrate the current mismatch between the archaeological site and the motivation for listing the historic center of Porto Nacional, and how architecture can contribute to heritage education by proposing the reinvention of places from its pre-existence, as well as contributing to the dissemination of regional archaeological studies.  The methodology used included a literature review that involves theoreticians of cultural heritage and architecture, as well as photographic, bibliographic, documentary, oral, and cultural heritage legislation sources, referenced by the Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (Iphan) [National Historical and Artistic Institute], in addition to the case studies of contemporary architectural interventions in archaeological sites.
