Abstract

Studies on urban heritage were carried out from the 19th century, when the debates on the preservation of built heritage also began. In this scenario, the Italian Gustavo Giovannoni (1873 - 1947) was an important character in determining methodologies for interventions in areas of historical interest, and in urban theory, promoting dialogues between the new and the old. His contributions were recovered after a long period of academic silence, especially by Françoise Choay. Having said that, it becomes the aim of this paper to trace relations between the theory of conservation and urban planning proposed by Giovannoni and Françoise Choay, relating them, later, with the trajectory of the preservation of urban heritage in Brazil, exploring ideas such as “heritage city” and “document city” (MOTTA, 2000; SANT'ANNA, 2017). Choay's works were chosen as lenses for viewing Giovannoni's contributions since the author is one of the few that addresses Giovannoni's concepts. Finally, there is a general understanding of the relationship between Giovannoni and the two urban approaches evidenced by Choay, assisting in the insertion of the Italian restorer in the chronology of urban studies and their possible dialogues with the path of the 20th century’s urban heritage preservation in Brazil.
