Abstract

This article aims to understand the role of the Defense Municipal Council of the Historical, Artistic and Architectural, Tourism, and Landscape Heritage of the city of Sorocaba (CMDP) in the interior of the state of São Paulo in the period from 1994 (from its creation) to 2019 (the year in which it was accompanied by management). It seeks to apprehend what are the prerogatives and guiding mechanisms, through the theoretical-critical instruments used and how the legislation on built heritage is exercised in view of the request for the listing, approval, inspection and maintenance of the protected property, thus showing how it is the culture of preserving memory is promoted in the midst of a city in constant development, of which it plays an important role in the construction of social identity.
