Abstract

The self-constructed territories in the city of Rio de Janeiro are historically perceived as an overlapping of state absences, as well as very blamed for urban ills. These evils still appear in the media with a discourse that has formed a social imaginary based on the denial and rejection of favela spaces. This paper argues that the slums can be perceived through other issues - beyond absences - because they shelter several cultural and social practices that are given little importance in the neoliberal homogenizing proposal. The social living in urban morphologies of organic character, typical of the hillside slums, relate directly to the way the territory has been consolidated, which is not considered by the urban projects that have been implemented in the last decades. It is not possible to treat different urban spaces based on a single perception, here we chose to investigate the territory of Favela do Salgueiro, where there are several festivities and cultural practices that relate to its occupation. Through the understanding of its practices and territorial uses it is possible to understand the peculiarity of the place, and then contribute to urban projects and policies compatible with reality.
