Abstract:
This essay aims to show, in the current era of emotivism, that it is possible to guide human desires through the acquisition of virtues and adequate practical reasoning. In contrast to Hume's thesis, which asserts that passions drive human action, these reflections show, based on MacIntyre's thinking, that human beings possess faculties, shaped by their culture and historical context, that allow them to prioritize their desires and move toward their own human flourishing. To do so, we begin by defining terms, differentiating between instincts, tendencies, and desires. Once we have clarified how desires are conceived, and thus escaping the possibility of being trapped in biological determinism, MacIntyre's conception of virtues is explained, in order to understand how these are indispensable for ordering one's desires. A third section presents what practical reasoning consists of, the possibility of error when discerning it, and how to train oneself in the correct use of this reason. The article concludes by highlighting the possibility and importance of organizing desires for the development of individuals and their communities.
