EPISTEMOLOGY AND PSYCHOLOGY IN WILHELM WINDELBAND’S EARLY NEO-KANTIANISM

This article reconstructs the central arguments of “On
Certainty”, a text published in 1873 by the neo-Kantian philosopher Wilhelm Windelband. Literature claims that this text represents an early phase of neo-Kantianism, characterized by a psychologistic tendency. Against this
interpretation, we show that Windelband already presents in “On Certainty” a conception of logic as a variety of transcendental logic, namely, as the science of the normative laws of thinking. Through this reconstruction, we provide the basis for an alternative interpretation of the transformation of neo-Kantianism between 1870 and 1880 in respect to the one offered by Klaus Christian Köhnke.
