Adopting the argument of a transformation process by which Chaereas undergoes, demonstrating a stronger character in the last two books of Chaereas and Callirhoe, I intend to explore the moments of uncertainty and hesitation that this character has in the first six books of this novel and how it fits in his heroic program. Therefore, as a comparison, I present the already well explored representation of Jason’s ethos and seek to find in it some germs of Chaereas’ conduct in order to trace a sort of family tree of this type of characterization, in some aspects a counterpoint to the traditional Homeric code.
