Virgilian poetry as part of the philosophical program in Contra academicos

In this article, the work Contra academicos is investigated from the perspective of an educational project, approaching Augustine’s treatment of poetry, placing it in the wake of the old quarrel between philosophy and poetics. With this, we seek to present a philosophical methodology that is present in the dialogue, whose purpose would be to prepare students for the path of philosophy. Worrying about presenting this method, we use examples contained in the dialogue, where Augustine makes use of the character Aeneas, from Virgil’s work, and discussions about wisdom, in order to show his disciples how the study of poetry with a view to philosophical practice.
