Abstract

This paper tracks the points of contact between poetry and prophecy in Ancient Greece based on readings of the Greek archaic epic poetry, and literary and anthropological studies. Those points of contact are summarized in three main topics: the experience of the divine; the similarity of formal components that makes poetic of both poetic and prophetic interpretation closer processes; the narrative use of prophecies and signs in Greek epic poetry. Both the reception and the performance of the Greek archaic poetry go beyond pure entertainment, and are more than mere aesthetic experiences (though they are certainly meaningful aspects of poetry): they are part of the experience of the divine.
