Stesichorus and the topics from archaic poetry in Phaedrus: from the Helen’s idol (eídolon) to Letter III

This study is an introduction to presence of poetic topics from Stesichorus in Plato and the types of philosophical application he makes of this poetic tradition. The thematic elements from Stesichorus are found in the Phaedrus and the Letter III of Plato, namely: how the idol (eídolon) affects the souls, the image of beauty, and the use of the name Stesichorus to indicate their political preferences against Dionysus. Plato quotes Stesichorus in Letter III (315d; 319e) and he exhorts Dionysus to pass from the false political regime, that is to say tyranny, which should be avoided, for real, that is to say kingdom.
