Abstract

In the fifth century CE, Nonnus of Panopolis composed the Dionysiaca, the longest surviving poem in ancient Greek, which recounts the story of Dionysus in hexameters. The aim of the present research is to study the poetic creativity of Nonnus, who may have been a Christian. The Dionysiaca has a secular theme, its objective being to celebrate Dionysus in the meter of the Homeric epic. Writing in Late Antiquity, Nonnus uses several styles and genres to build his colossal poem, relying heavily on the poikilia technique. In this way, he creates a new version of Dionysus as a character that transcends the god of theater and wine to influence the realms of combat and love, thereby contributing to the goal of Hellenizing the ancient world. I conclude that Nonnus used poikilia to subvert the ancient rules for the construction of Greek poetry and create a unique epic experience.
