Abstract

This article presents an investigation of similarities between Nietzsche’s philosophical thought and stories of the “foolish sage” Nasruddin through an analysis of the writings of the former and anecdotes about the latter. Viewing the similarities through the lens of Sufism, I briefly review the instructional and philosophical value of humor and consider precedents, such as allusions to the contribution of humor to the teachings of Cynicism, and the current state of related knowledge. Building on previous work, I argue that Nietzsche’s thought implies a “disentification of the self” that abandons the conception of any “I” and seeks to overcome the idea of God by abolishing it (or verifying its having been transcended). In Sufism, this disentification, favored in some of Nasrudin’s “anti-philosophical” teachings, is presented as a condition for a “mystical union” with God, a primordial and unifying reality both outside and within humanity. Nasrudin's accounts and Nietzsche’s philosophy, I conclude, while constituting distinct approaches to the exaltation of life, often in its everyday aspects, can contribute – and converge – to reinvigorate Western thought.
