Abstract

One of the key figures in the history of classical studies is Friedrich August Wolf (1759–1824), who is best known for framing the “Homeric question” in modern terms with the publication of his Prolegomena ad Homerum (1795) and working to overturn the subordination of philology to theology through the systematic approach presented in his Darstellung der Alterthums-Wissenschaft (1807). His proposal that philologists engage with contemporary issues appears to have served as a model for the effort by Friedrich Nietzsche a few decades later to imagine a “philology of the future” (Zukunftsphilologie). In the present article, I revisit and critique the disciplinary impact of Wolf’s work in terms of both Bildung (education) and Wissenschaft (science), highlighting the relevance of various aspects of his legacy for those who study antiquity today, including problems to which Nietzsche drew attention.
