Abstract

Within the scope of automated information systems, the use of ontology has two main goals: it can be used as a component of a system or as a reference. This reference is a kind of comparison standard employed to evaluate the capacity of the model underpinning the system to represent the world. The present article explores the latter application, discussing the usefulness of ontologies in conceptual modeling processes. After the presentation of modeling essentials and the contextualization of the research, we present ontologies used as references. We propose a list of topics to ontological evaluation of models according to a modeling language viewpoint and describe a study of case to test the proposal feasibility. We hope to contribute to the research which relates ontologies and conceptual modeling through empirical results.
